A Kingdom for Hope

While our dogs are pampered with love and attention, there are some dogs that are abused, neglected, and slaughtered for their meat. These dogs do not deserve to be treated like this – they need a second chance in life.

Animal Kingdom Foundation, Inc. (AKF), in partnership with Eton Centris, presents A Kingdom for Hope – an adoption drive event that will be held on April 27, 4:00 PM at the Centris Walk Activity Area, Eton Centris, EDSA cor. Quezon Ave.

A Kingdom for Hope, organized by Paws & Tails Grooming Salon and Boutique, will be a summer afternoon of compassion, care and concern for AKF’s adoptables. There will be many free activities, interactive games, stage shows and surprises for all attendees!

Entry to the event will require only a minimal donation fee of P50.00, which will go towards AKF’s rescue and rehabilitation efforts for countless slaughter-bound aspins that were rescued and given hope for a better life. On top of the activities and games, there will also be free limited spay & neuter, free anti-rabies vaccinations, discounted vaccination shots, a mini bazaar, and many more.

Pro Dog-a-Holic will be in full force in supporting this event, along with PRODOGS-CENTRAL Alliance (Official FB Group of PRODOGS Central Inc), D.O.G. Philippines (Dog Owners Group Ph.), BDW - Bulacan Dog Walkers, PUSH - Philippine Union for Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes (Philippine Alaskan Malamute Club, Inc. How Often Should You Feed Your Dogs?

This is a common question for many dog guardians- how often should they feed their pets. Experts say that it is recommended to feed your adult dogs twice a day; one in the morning and one in the evening. But puppies below six months of age require thrice or four times a day of feeding or as required by their veterinarians.

Dogs normally get excited on the mere sight (or smell?) of food but newly adopted dogs get a little finicky especially in a new environment. You need to gain their trust first and of course they are still adjusting to the new environment and this is the perfect opportunity to teach them scheduled feeding.

You can start by offering him a bowl of food and getting it after 10 minutes regardless if he has touched his food or not.

At the next scheduled feeding time, put the bowl back down, again for only ten minutes. And in no time your dog will learn that he needs to eat when the food is offered.

With regularly feeding schedule you will be able to establish a routine for your dogs, not only that, you’ll be able to spot easily if your dogs are not feeling well. A sudden change of appetite could be a sign that you need to bring your dog to a veterinarian.

Another benefit of set feedings is that a dog that eats on a schedule poops on a schedule. In addition, if you live in an urban area, leaving a bowl of kibble on the ground all day can attract pests, like ants, cockroaches and mice. It is to everyone’s advantage to keep feeding times regular.

Should you shave your dogs during summer?

Some of our beloved dogs are bred with thicker coats and as the temperature rises, giving them a haircut will help them in cooling off.

If you have a dog with a very thick coat which seems to suffer from the heat, some veterinarians suggest shaving them. Though you should resist shaving shorter-haired breeds because not only do they get no benefit from it, but they also run the risk of sunburn once shaved.

Actually, any dog can suffer sunburn, so if you do shave your thick-coated dog, be sure to leave at least an inch of hair to protect your pet from the sun's rays.

You may also want to shave a dog that stays outside all the time, has a matted coat, and is likely to be wet often. In these circumstances, a dog can develop an unpleasant condition called myiasis or maggots in the fur. If your dog is prone to hot spots, a summer shave may also be very helpful, but discuss this with your vet first.

If you do plan on shaving your furry pals this summer, experts offer these simple tips:

  • Think about hiring a pro. Most of us have little or no experience grooming our dogs, and many pets can be nervous, raising the potential for painful accidents.

  • Keep clippers cool. Take frequent breaks and use the lubricant that comes together with your clippers.

  • Leave an inch of hair. This gives your pet enough coat to protect from sunburn and chilly summer nights.

  • No close shaves. A close shave can leave guard hair embedded under the skin, new hair won't grow until these ends fall out, causing irregular growth and often skin problems. There is also the risk of giving your dog a razor burn.
